The Lighthouse Keeper

From 1922 to 1925 my father, Charles Pollington was one of the two lighthouse keepers at Double Island Point, off the Queensland coast. Double Island Point is off Fraser Island.

Aged two, I climbed up the spiral staircase outside the lighthouse and a crowd collected underneath with a blanket to catch me while my mother was stood crying. I was throwing my bonnet, shoes and socks through the railings. Father crept up behind me and grabbed me before I could squeeze through the railings. He said that these were the worst moments of his life - including his time in World War One.

Thanks Leslie for letting us know about the blog re Double Island Point Lighthouse. Old photos (1922) are always so precious. You might like to add a link to Lighthouses of Australia website www.lighthouse.net.au and our page on the Double Island Point Light. www.lighthouse.net.au/lights/QLD/Double%20Island%20Point/Double%20Is%20Pt.htm

Charles Pollington was also a keeper at Sandy Cape, Fraser Island. We have a picture of him in our archives, siting in front of the lighthose with a little girl, which might very well be your mother.
By the way, the above map is also from the Lighthouses of Australia website. It really is worth checking.
