Australian history that I participated in

This picture is of the A.M.P. building in Brisbane, which became headquarters of General MacArthur in W.W. 2. Here, on 8th floor I, an 18-yr-old stenographer, among some 12 W.A.A.F. girls, did an 8-week evening course in teletyping early in 1942 and was sent to W.T. Sigs in Townsville, Queensland, to relieve men for 'forward' duty in Torres St Islands and New Guinea.

I had a momentous experience - I was hurrying to get into the lift and a man started to push me away. General MacArthur - tall and in U.S. Army uniform, with his corncob pipe in mouth - said, "Just let the little lady in."

Oh dear! What a vivid war-time incident that was...
